Concept: AirPods have outgrown the Bluetooth menu, they deserve their own app

One of the main advantages of AirPods has always been their ability to be essentially invisible, both to the user and to the people around them. When they were first introduced, they had two functions, the ability to play music and the ability to talk to Siri Touch. But over the past 5 years, Apple has added new features both through hardware revisions and software updates that make us wonder if AirPods deserve their own companion app on the iPhone. Here’s what we think it should look like.

AirPods have become increasingly important in people’s lives, so much so that I would say they are now an indispensable addition to the iPhone. As they become more advanced, it becomes increasingly difficult for users to find the features that Apple adds. Not to mention that the company still treats AirPods like any other bluetooth device in the settings menu.

Settings and updates

The accompanying AirPods app would probably look something like the Watch app. There would be a simple main tab with all the settings you would like quick access to. Many of them have been withdrawn from the bluetooth menu and page about it. At the top, you can see your AirPods that are currently in use, search for settings, check the battery level, and switch to another pair of AirPods headsets you might want to use.

There are three groups of cells that include the relevant setting options. The first group includes hardware controls such as the ability to adjust button mode, enable or disable head detection, and test surround sound.

Below that group, you can see information about your AirPods headphones, adjust settings for Find My Network, and, yes, download software updates. One of our biggest drawbacks with AirPods is the way Apple sends software updates to users. They’re invisible and honestly, shit. There is technically no way to actually invoke a software update. You just have to wait for this to happen to your AirPods headphones, check the information screen and hope for the best. So, like all of Apple’s other important assistive devices, AirPods should have a software update pane that displays new features and alerts you when updates become available.

The middle tab in the Watch app is home to the clock dial gallery, but there’s nothing comparable to AirPods. So I turned to an idea I had to help alleviate antitrust issues with the App Store and Apple services. They could add a new apps tab that shows apps and services for music, podcasts, sounds, and videos.

Discover new things

Like the Watch app and the Tips app, the detection card can teach users about features they may not be aware of. It could also serve as a pseudo-newsroom for Apple to inform people about new features and software updates. When someone wants to solve a problem with their AirPods headphones, they can come here. It would be a centralized place to learn about your AirPods regardless of model.

Apple could include support for Beats headphones and earphones in this app if it wants. But I think they would like to keep them separate. After all, they don’t have a dedicated card on like they have AirPods now.

What do you think of the idea of Apple making a dedicated AirPods app to manage settings and download software updates? Let us know in the comments below!
