Comment: Apple still needs an AirPower-like add-on despite having a MagSafe Duo

Apple discontinued AirPower even before the product arrived in stores, and since then the company has been investing in its MagSafe line of accessories – which includes a MagSafe Duo charger. While I really like the MagSafe Duo charger, Apple still needs an AirPower-like accessory.

AirPower was a really ambitious product. He promised to allow users to charge up to three Apple devices at the same time – so you can charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. Another highlight of AirPower is that users should not place the device in a specific location, as the accessory would have multiple coils to allow charging anywhere on its surface.

To strengthen the integration between Apple devices, the iPhone would show the battery level for all devices installed on AirPower, and this was widely advertised when the iPhone X was announced in 2017.

Unfortunately, although former Apple vice president of marketing Phil Schiller said the company “knows how to do it,” Apple never made it to launch AirPower. After more than a year of silence, the company confirmed to reporters that AirPower will not meet the company’s “high standards”, so the project was canceled.

MagSafe era

With the launch of the iPhone 12 in 2020, one of the key features of the new phones was MagSafe, which Apple calls a new arrangement of magnets on the back of the phone combined with NFC to enable new types of accessories for the iPhone.

While there are cases for the iPhone and even car holders compatible with MagSafe, this technology shines with the MagSafe charger. Apple itself offers two versions of the MagSafe charger: a simple one that can charge only one iPhone or AirPods, and the MagSafe Duo, which tries to replace the AirPower as an accessory that can charge multiple devices at the same time.

I have been using the MagSafe Duo charger for a while now and it can be very useful for users who have iPhone and Apple Watch. It is also perfect for travel, because not only does it have two chargers in one, but also because you can fold it up and put it in a backpack or pocket.

MagSafe Duo is not AirPower

Yes, the MagSafe Duo can charge iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time, but far from what AirPower was supposed to be.

AirPower was about bringing users more convenience and freedom, because you wouldn’t have to think about where to put the devices or even which devices in it. Apple has demonstrated how it would be possible to charge your iPhone with another iPhone or AirPods and an Apple Watch using AirPower at the same time, and that’s something the MagSafe Duo just can’t do.

The main scenario that makes me want AirPower-like accessories is to charge my iPhone and AirPod at the same time. I can put my iPhone and Apple Watch together on the MagSafe Duo, but I still need another dedicated charger for AirPods. Sometimes a friend needs to charge their iPhone, and I can’t share the MagSafe Duo with them if I use it with my iPhone.

Apple could return AirPower

Recently Bloomberg The report states that Apple has not yet given up on launching a charger for multiple devices. Earlier this year, Mark Gurman said the company was still working on a new add-on similar to AirPower, but it was unclear if the project was going well.

And of course, Apple doesn’t have to stop selling the MagSafe Duo with a new multi-device charger. The MagSafe Duo is still super practical and probably more suitable for some situations, and I would still use my own even if I had an AirPower.

What do you think? Do you also want AirPower-like accessories or is the MagSafe Duo more than enough? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
