Apple’s ‘M3’ chip using TSMC’s 3nm node is already in the test production phase

Taiwan Publications Supply Chain Report DigiTimes claims that Apple ‘s chipmaker TSMC has begun test production of M3 chips built on its 3nm process node called N3.

The report cites anonymous industry sources that Apple devices equipped with a 3nm chip are likely to debut in 2023 after TSMC begins mass production of new chips in the fourth quarter of 2022. Quite distant rumors claim that 3nm chips will be seen running iPhone 15 with A17 chip and Apple Silicon Mac with M3 chip.

Last month, The Information’s Wayne Ma speculated that some of the M3 chips would have up to four matrices, meaning the chips have a 40-core CPU. For context, the most powerful M1 Max and M1 Pro chips of the current generation have a 10-core CPU, while the more affordable M1 chip has an 8-core CPU.

As for TSMC, rumors claim that advances in the 3nm process node should allow the M3 chip to enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2022 and reach customers like Apple in the first quarter of 2023.
