Apple’s long-awaited augmented reality headphones could finally drop out late next year, says TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The device is expected to have a surprisingly powerful chip that would put it on par with the M1 Mac in processing performance. Another low-power processor will reportedly control many of the built-in sensors in the headphones.

Apple AR headphones are expected in late 2022

“We predict that Apple’s AR headphones, which will be launched in the 4th quarter of the 22nd, will be equipped with two processors,” reads the latest research by Kuo – which has proven to be incredibly reliable in the past – Cult Maca.

“The higher-end processor will have similar computing power to the M1 for the Mac, while the lower-end processor will be in charge of computing the sensors.” And there’s a good reason for all that processing power.

Kuo expects the headphones to also offer a virtual reality experience through a pair of 4K micro OLED screens manufactured by Sony. Driving these two screens, despite their small size, will not be easy thanks to their high resolutions.

“Apple’s AR headphones require a special processor because the computing power of the sensor is significantly higher than that of the iPhone,” Kuo added. “AR headphones require at least 6-8 optical modules to provide users with continuous video-transparent AR services at the same time.”

‘Comprehensive range of applications’

Kuo also predicted that Apple’s first AR headphones would offer a “comprehensive range of applications” and would work independently of the iPhone or Mac. He believes Apple is actually working on replacing the iPhone with headphones within 10 years.

Apple has reportedly been working on its own AR / VR hardware for years, and in the meantime has continued to make major improvements in the augmented reality experiences on the iPhone and iPad with its ARKit framework.
