Apple will soon allow you to fix your iPhone 12, iPhone 13 yourself

Apple today announced a “Self-Repair” program that will allow customers to complete their iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 repairs with access to genuine Apple parts, tools and manuals.

In what can be interpreted as a big step forward for the right to repair, Apple has finally opened up to support customers who are happy with the idea of ​​tinkering inside their iPhones, iPads and Macs. This scheme will start in stages, and over time, support for multiple devices will be added.

Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said: “Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed. In the past three years, Apple has almost doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools and training, and now we provide an option for those who want to complete their repairs themselves. ”

The first phase of the Self-Repair program will focus on parts of the iPhone that are typically repaired and replaced, including the battery, screen, and camera. More parts will be added to the list later next year. The company said it would add Apple Silicon Macs with an M1 chip in the coming period, including a MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro, a Mac mini and a 24-inch iMac to the repair program.

Apple will provide repair resources through Apple’s new online self-service store, which will offer 200+ individual parts and tools for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 from the day of launch.

Note that Apple will refer you to the Repair Manual first. You can then order parts and tools through the online store we just mentioned. When you complete the repair, Apple will allow you to (optionally) return the used or defective part for recycling. People who do this will be rewarded with a credit that can be used on their next purchase.

With that, don’t hope. The giant from Cupertino warned that self-service repair is intended only for “individual technicians with knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices”. This has encouraged the “vast majority of customers” to visit professional repair service providers and Apple certified technicians for “the safest and most reliable way to repair.”
