Apple Watch continues to lead the sale of smart watches despite fierce competition from Samsung

A new Counterpoint Research report released today shows that total smartwatch deliveries in the third quarter of 2021 were up 16 percent from last year’s third quarter. Apple retained first place in the number of units shipped, while Samsung achieved the largest quarterly shipments, coming in second place.

Apple’s smartwatch market share fell 10 percent from a year earlier (YoY) as the launch of the Apple Watch Series 7 was delayed for the fourth quarter. Despite this, the brand delivered the most smartwatches in Q3 2021, as in the previous quarter.

We believe that the success of the Apple Watch Series 7 is likely to be reflected in the report for the fourth quarter as the wearable device offers a significantly superior experience compared to other smartwatches. This is a big reason why Apple has a premium, and the Apple Watch is selling strongly despite fierce competition from cheaper wearables with similar prices to Android OEMs.

A Counterpoint Research report shows that Samsung regained second place on the list from Huawei and narrowed the gap with Apple’s sales volume in the third quarter of 2021. This can be attributed to the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 series which marks the company’s transition to Android-based Wear OS from his Tizen operating system. In addition, the new body feature and the choice of two variants (basic and classic) are also well received by consumers.

Senior analyst at research firm Sujeong Lim said: “Samsung was better than expected in the third quarter. Although shipments of the Galaxy Watch 4 series were much higher than expected, more than 60% of total shipments were sold in North America and Europe, where the share of mid- to high-priced models is high. To further increase its market share, Samsung is expected to launch affordable models within 2-3 years to target the fast-growing Asian market. One-third of smartwatches sold in the third quarter of 2021 were priced below $ 100. ”

It is also worth mentioning the stellar performance of Indian smartwatch manufacturers. Noise and BoAt took first and second place in the Indian smartwatch market. Both brands more than doubled the amount of products sold compared to the previous quarter. The products of these manufacturers are directly focused on the budget and mid-priced segments, so they run LiteOS and do not offer as many features and functions as the Apple Watch.
