Apple TV + series ‘Manhunt’ details the desperate search for John Wilkes Booth

Many people know that John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln at the Ford Theater in Washington, DC, 1865. But not everyone knows that a desperate, 12-day chase to capture the killer followed. Apple TV + announced on Wednesday that it had ordered a limited series called Manhunt – partly a real crime, partly historical fiction – tell that story.

human hunting: Based on best-selling book

Writer / producer Monica Beletsky, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee (Fargo, Friday Night Lights) created a series based on the bestseller by James Swanson, Manhunt: 12-day chase for Lincoln’s killer. She will serve as a showrunner and executive producer. Carl Franklin nominated for an Emmy (The devil in the blue dress, Mindhunter) will direct.

English actor Tobias Menzies won an Emmy Award (The Crown, Outlander) will star in the show. No stranger to pieces from the period, Menzies plays Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s war secretary and friend.

The frantic effort to capture Booth and execute Lincoln’s legacy drove Stanton insane. That sounds like good food for drama.

Serious questions of history

Apple TV + described the trip after the first American presidential assassination as “partly historical fiction, partly thriller conspiracy”. The series will examine the struggle to preserve and protect the ideals that were the basis of Lincoln’s plans for reconstruction after the Civil War – issues that resonate to this day.

Manhunt depicts black historical figures whose lives have been intertwined with escape, human hunting and subsequent investigations into serious crimes. Among them is Mary Simms, a former slave doctor who treated Booth’s injury and gave him a safe haven after the crime.

The first series in Beletsky’s contract with Apple TV +

Apple Studios will produce the series with the co-production of Lionsgate, in collaboration with POV Entertainment, Walden Media and 3 Arts Entertainment. Layne Eskridge executive producer alongside director Franklin and author Swanson.

Manhunt joins the expanded line of the upcoming Apple Original series developed and produced by Apple Studios. They include WeCrashed, based on a hit podcast starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway. Based on a novel by Walter Mosley, The last days of Ptolemy Gray is a limited series starring Samuel L. Jackson and Dominique Fishback.

A drama from the Second World War Masters of the air comes from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone. And comedy series High Desert will star Patricia Arquette, who will also be executive producer alongside director Ben Stiller.
