Apple sues Ukrainian director over comedy ‘Apple-Man’

We’re used to seeing Apple involved in more legal disputes over its products and services, but this one is a little different. The Cupertino-based company has filed a lawsuit against Ukrainian indie film director Vasil Moskalenko, who wrote a comedy called “The Man of the Apple.”

The first thing you might assume is that the film has something about Apple (the company), but it doesn’t. Instead, the film is a satire about famous superheroes because the main character has the superpower to levitate apples (yes, fruit). The film was funded through Kickstarter, which raised about $ 120,000.

However, it seems that Apple’s legal department was not satisfied that the company’s name was associated with comedy. iPhone in Canada reports that Apple has sent a statement of objections and filed lawsuits against Apple-Man and director Moskalenko.

While it is Apple-Man The director said that his film has already been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), and Apple is asking for the trademark registration application to be rejected by launching an “aggressive opposition”.

Apple has filed a lawsuit against Moskalenko over concerns that consumers will believe it Apple-Man is “affiliated with, or approved, approved or provided by Apple,” the company said in a 467-page lawsuit.

Moskalenko claims that the lawsuit from Apple is “intimidation of a trademark” because the film does not mention Apple products. The director is afraid that he will have to spend all the collected money on lawsuits or even be forced to “delete” the film.

My movie is about apples, fruit. […] I’m going to have to spend almost all of my Kickstarter money on litigation. […] If my registration is denied, there is no guarantee that Apple will not request the deletion of my film after its release.

While Moskalenko hopes to resolve the situation with Apple, the company has not made any statement about the case.
