Apple October Event: Rumors and Expectations

Apple’s September event marked the introduction of the iPhone 13, the new launch iPad and the all-new iPad mini. Apple has something else planned in the end of 2021, and rumors say that it could hold another event in October. Check out our full overview of what Apple could announce at the October event below, including new updates for the Mac, AirPods 3 and more.

History of events in October Apple

Apple has been holding the October events at an irregular pace for years, with the October events not proving as consistent as the September ones. Here are the details of the October events in recent years:

  • October 2020: “Hi, Speed” event for iPhone 12 and HomePod mini
  • October 2018: “More in preparation” event to announce new iPad Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini
  • October 2016: “Hello again” event for MacBook Pro and new TV app
  • October 2014: “It’s Too Long” for iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and 5K iMac

Whether Apple will hold the October event in 2021 remains to be seen, but Bloomberg Mark Gurman suggested that Apple is planning such an event with a focus on new Macs. We will definitely update this post whenever the October event is officially announced with all the details.

M1X MacBook Pros

At the October Apple event, the main announcement we expect is the long-talked-about overhaul of the MacBook Pro. It is rumored that Apple will work on the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that run on the so-called “M1X” processor.

Bloomberg reported that the new M1X chip, or whatever you eventually call it, will feature eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, available in 16 or 32 graphics core variations. The machine is expected to support up to 64 GB of RAM, compared to the current M1 chip which is limited to 16 GB of RAM.

It is also rumored that the new MacBook Pro will mark the return of more connectivity options: MagSafe for charging, HDMI and SD card. Apple is also expected to abandon the controversial Touch Bar in favor of the traditional set of function keys.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are expected to use the new mini LED LED screen technology. Apple first used mini-LED technology in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro announced earlier this year. For those unfamiliar, the mini-LED relies on thousands of really small LEDs in the backlight, resulting in a higher contrast ratio and a deeper black color, similar to OLED, but without the risk of burnout.

Finally, it is rumored that the new MacBook Pro will have a completely new design with flat edges similar to the iPad Pro and iPhone 13.

The new MacBook Pro are eagerly awaited upgrades and will fix many things that people don’t like in the current MacBook Pro generation. These include removing the Touch Bar, adding more ports with Thunderbolt and USB-C, and improved display quality.

“Mac mini Pro”

According to reports and rumors, the new MacBook Pro isn’t the only Mac update Apple is currently working on. Bloomberg reported that the new Mac mini will have specifications identical to the M1X MacBook Pro with up to 64GB of RAM, a 10-core CPU and 16 or 32 graphics cores.

Meanwhile, publisher Jon Prosser reported that Apple’s Mac mini with M1X drive will also introduce a new generation of industrial design. The new Mac mini is said to have a redesigned outer casing with Plexiglas-like reflective material on top paired with an aluminum casing.

Prosser also claimed that the new Mac mini will have additional ports compared to the current Mac mini with M1 drive, including four Thunderbolt 3, two USB-A ports, Ethernet and HDMI. The Mac mini could also use the magnetic power connector that Apple first introduced with the 24-inch iMac earlier this year.

So where would this new Mac mini fit in Apple’s lineup? Apple is currently selling the Mac mini with M1 drive as an initial option, along with a higher-end model still powered by Intel. This mini mini powered by the M1X is expected to replace the Intel model and be sold along with the M1X configuration.

macOS Monterey release date

While Apple unveiled iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8 to the public last month, we’re still waiting for the release of macOS Monterey. Apple is likely to officially announce the release date of macOS Monterey this fall along with its new Macs.

macOS Monterey includes a number of new features, such as the all-new Safari, AirPlay on Mac, SharePlay and FaceTime enhancements and more. Find out more in our complete guide here.

AirPods 3

AirPods 3 has been talked about for over a year and is finally expected to be released sometime this fall. The AirPods 3 is expected to have a design similar to the AirPods Pro, with shorter stems and a more rounded ear design, but without replaceable ear tips.

Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will continue to sell AirPods 2 along with AirPods 3, giving you two different options on the bottom line of the AirPods line. This makes the AirPods line quite versatile in terms of features, shape factors and price.

What not to expect

The transition to Apple Silicon is in full swing, but there are some products that Apple is working on and that we do not expect to be released this year. Namely, this includes a new version of the Mac Pro powered by Apple Silicon, as well as an iMac with a larger screen with Apple Silicon. We should also not expect the new AirPods Pro, although they could arrive sometime in 2022.
