Apple is still working on a charger for multiple devices like AirPower

Apple’s AirPower wireless charger may not have seen the light of day, but the company hasn’t given up on its ambitions for a multi-device wireless charger. New Bloomberg details of a report that Apple is continuing with a new multi-device charger with short- and long-distance charging technologies.

Apple does sell a MagSafe Duo that can wirelessly charge both the Apple Watch and the iPhone, but these are just two separate wireless chargers connected together. This is unlike the unfortunate AirPower which was able to charge up to three devices (iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods) at the same time, without the need for a separate setup from the user.

Additionally, the report states that Apple is working on other wireless charging technologies that work over short and long distances. There is currently no such wireless charging technology, and if Apple is successful, it could pave the way for a truly “wireless” charging experience. Some Android OEMs have demonstrated similar technology, but it is still under development.

Gourmet also believes Apple is working on reverse charging capabilities for its devices. He imagines that Apple will allow the iPad to charge the iPhone, which in turn could charge the AirPods. Reverse charging is a common feature on Android smartphones, but it’s something Apple hasn’t added to iPhones and iPads yet, despite years of rumors.

Given Apple’s public failure to launch AirPower, that remains to be the case
