Apple has filed a lawsuit against the NSO group of spyware creators “Pegasus” for targeting iPhone users

Apple has filed a lawsuit against Israeli company NSO Group and its parent group for targeting and monitoring iPhone and Mac users with its Pegasus spyware. In an attempt to protect its customers from further harm, the company seeks a permanent ban on the NSO Group from using any of its products and services.

The NSO Group is behind many popular iPhone and Mac spyware used to target and spy on journalists and other senior government officials. The lawsuit also provides more details on how the exploitation of the FORCEDENTRY group was used to break into the victim’s phone and install Pegasus spyware on it.

The NSO Group and its clients are devoting vast resources and capabilities to nation states to carry out highly targeted cyber attacks, giving them access to a microphone, camera, and other sensitive data on Apple and Android devices. To deliver FORCEDENTRY to Apple devices, the attackers created Apple IDs to send malicious data to the victim’s device – allowing the NSO group or its customers to deliver and install Pegasus spyware without the victim’s knowledge. Although abused to deliver FORCES, Apple servers were not hacked or compromised in attacks.

Apple will notify a small number of iPhone users who have been targeted using FORCEDENTRY exploitation. It will also do so for all future spyware attacks sponsored by the state it detects.

Apple said in a press release that researchers found that other mobile platforms have 15 times more malware infections than the iPhone, with only 2 percent of the malware targeted to iOS devices. In addition, Apple has included several new security protections in iOS 15, and the company “has not seen any evidence of successful remote attacks on devices running iOS 15.”

Apple also intends to support the Citizen Lab group with pro-bono technical assistance, threat intelligence, and engineering assistance. He will also contribute $ 10 million and any damages awarded to him for the lawsuit to organizations working on research and advocacy of cyber-surveillance.
