Apple Fitness + adds SharePlay for motivation, ‘smack talk’

Apple Fitness + added group workouts and meditation sessions on Monday, allowing users to communicate in real time with up to 32 other people. The new feature uses FaceTime’s new SharePlay feature, which now runs on iOS devices and comes to macOS Monterey later this fall.

“It’s a really fun way to connect with friends and family, even exchange some words of encouragement or friendly banter, while at the same time making progress towards closing their circles,” Jay Blahnik, Apple’s vice president of fitness technology, said in a press release.

New features for Apple Fitness +

Focused on real-time Apple Watch biosensors, Fitness + offers pre-recorded workouts in more than ten categories. A team of optimistic trainers conducts trainings for beginners as well as for experienced rats in the gym. The subscription service provides users with real-time feedback during training, showing heart rate, calories burned and progress towards closing rings for movement, exercise and standing on the Apple Watch.

Like the Fitness + Burn Bar, the new SharePlay implementation is designed to motivate users during training. Apple says SharePlay sessions will be “streaming fully synchronized for each participant.”

Apple Fitness + workouts last from five to 45 minutes. And different music styles keep the sessions exciting. Exercises come in these categories: high-intensity interval training (HIIT), strength, yoga, dance, core, cycling, pilates, meditation, treadmill (for running and walking), rowing, and what Apple calls “careful cooling.”

How SharePlay works with Fitness +

Fitness + was launched late last year, when many gyms remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Users can participate in the service’s training workshops from the comfort of their homes. It’s convenient, but certainly not as social as going to a yoga studio or gym.

Adding real-time communication with other participants could go a long way in alleviating that feeling of isolation. Apple has set out exactly how SharePlay will allow Fitness + users to engage in group distance training.

“Fitness + subscribers can use SharePlay to start group training or meditation with up to 32 of their friends and family while using FaceTime on an iPhone or iPad, and the selected Fitness + session will be streamed in full sync for each participant. After a FaceTime call, users will come to the Fitness app, select a workout or meditation, see their friends and family on screen and get started. SharePlay also works with Apple TV so users can watch the workout on the big screen while staying connected with friends on FaceTime using their iPhone or iPad. When working in a group via SharePlay, users will see their metrics and progress toward closing activity rings, while seeing and hearing friends at the same time. During training, when someone moves forward to the Burn Bar or closes their activity rings, everyone who practices will be informed so they can celebrate together. ”

Apple Fitness + currently works with Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. SharePlay will invite Mac users to a fun streaming workout – at the end. Apple released macOS Monterey on Monday, but without the SharePlay feature. So, this new Apple Fitness + communication function will not work until “later this fall,” Apple said.

Apple also expanded the Time to Walk feature in the fitness service with a new episode on Monday. Marilee Talkington, a legally blind writer, pedagogue and actress has appeared in the Apple TV + series See, leads a new guided walking session.
“In this walk, she talks about defying expectations and how she helps others do the same,” Apple said. The company introduced Time to Walk earlier this year to encourage those wearing the Apple Watch to take off.

The Fitness + audio series includes guests such as Dolly Parton, Anthony Joshua, Naomi Campbell and Bebe Rexha. And Apple is just continuing to add new episodes.
