Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How to choose the perfect location for your home

Source: iMore

One of the biggest components of Animal Crossing games is designing and expanding your home. The latest addition to the series, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, gives you a huge amount of control from the very beginning of the game allowing you to choose the layout of the island and where you will set up your tent. Here’s what to keep in mind when deciding.

Choose your island

One of the first decisions you will have to make in the new game Animal Crossing: New Horizons is to choose the look of the deserted island you will be moving to. You will get a choice of four maps that all follow a similar basic layout, with a river, a beach, open lawns, some elevated areas and some rocky parts along the coast. You will move to the largest open space, which also houses Resident Services, a center for making, trading and other activities during the game.

Resident Services cannot be moved, so make sure you like where it is located. It will always be in a fairly centralized place, but you will want to have plenty of open space around it for other buildings to add later as your deserted island turns into a busy village. You won’t be able to cross rivers at first, so you also need to make sure you have everything you need in your starting zone. The biggest thing you could miss is the pond, which is the only place to catch some fish from the game. You should be able to find a winner among the four choices offered, but if you are really picky, you can restart the game and get a new choice.

Set up the tent

Once you have chosen your map of the island, it is time to choose where you will live on it. When you visit entrepreneurial raccoon Tom Nook at Resident Services, he will give you a tent that you can set up anywhere in the home area. The tent will be turned into your home when you complete enough tasks to earn the Nook miles needed to repay the loan that Nook gives you for all your initial supplies.

As with Resident Services, you will want to leave enough space around your tent to expand. You’ll probably want space for a bunch of seating and garden furniture, and it’s certainly nice to have some water and trees nearby for easy access to the fishing spot and resource gathering. Those features and location of Resident Services are the only things you really need to worry about.

While two other residents start on your island, they will not pitch their tents until you choose your location. They will choose for themselves temporary places that are approximately equidistant from you, but will be happy to listen to advice if you want to choose a location for them. You can leave them alone or bring them closer to make it easier for you to visit.

Don’t worry too much

By upgrading Resident Services, you will eventually be able to relocate your home, so these decisions are not permanent. Relocation fees are pretty high, especially in early play, so choose wisely, but don’t worry too much about the perfection of things. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch for a reason because it is so cool and relaxing.
