Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How many times can you use each tool?

Source: iMore

Remember when you first started playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons when it was first launched, before it became one of the most popular games on Switch? Do you remember throwing a rope into the sea, catching a big fish, only to have your faithful fishing rod broken in your hands? Are you worried about reliving that feeling of emptiness, loss, and mild anxiety because you now had to make a new fishing rod just to keep fishing? Now that the 2.0 patch for the game has come out, we don’t want you to be afraid that history will repeat itself after you sail to a deserted island with Kapp’n or just before you enjoy a coffee at The Roost.

Build, create, then rebuild

Animal Crossing: New Horizons puts you on a deserted island with nothing but your hands and a few animals. You start with a tent, finally upgrade to a house, and then adjust it to your taste. You will do all this while making friends with the villagers and using the tools you have made yourself to design a paradise on the island however you want.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Patch 2.0 brings many new features to the franchise, but in addition to the return of a certain sea captain and the opportunity to finally drink coffee, there is a reunion with one of the frustrating aspects of the game: the durability of the tools. However, one way to avoid being left empty-handed while in trouble is to be aware of how many times you can use the tool before it breaks down, and more importantly, how much more you use your tool before it falls apart.

Here’s a quick guide to endurance tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

Fishing rod

Fishing rods will lose their endurance with every successful catch, whether it is a small fish, a giant shark or a piece of garbage. Throwing a stick without actually catching something doesn’t count in the number of uses before the break, so don’t feel bad if you throw too far away from the fish shadow and have to throw it again.

  • Lightweight fishing rod: 10 catches
  • Fishing rod: 30 catches (also includes colorful, fish and outdoor fishing rods available at Nook’s Cranny)
  • Golden fishing rod: 90 throws

No.

Like a fishing rod, only a successful beetle catch will be against the number of uses of the net. Every time you swing your net that doesn’t end with a catch is a fair game … and that involves the occasional blow to the head of a fellow countryman. We do not encourage arming your network, we are just saying that the game will not penalize you for an accidental hit.

  • Flimsy Net: 10 catches
  • No.: 30 catches (also includes colorful, star and outdoor nets in Nook’s Cranny)
  • Golden Net: 90 catches

Shovel

You will use a shovel more than a net or fishing rod, but that is because there are more ways to break a shovel. Hitting a stone with a shovel for ore or other materials counts as a one-time use, as does digging up wood, flowers, or objects buried in the ground. Digging a hole in the ground or filling an empty hole, however, does not go against durability.

  • Flimsy Shovel: 40 uses
  • Shovel: 100 uses (also includes colorful, outer shovels and shovels with a printed design in Nook’s Cranny)
  • Golden shovel: 200 uses

The ax

We knew you’d be worried about this – sorry, we couldn’t resist, but Ax’s endurance is similar to the way Shovels work. Every swing of an ax that strikes a tree or stone counts as use, even if what you strike gives you nothing in return. One quick note: just The ax i Golden Ax are able to cut down trees, so make sure you are right when you pass all Paul Bunyan on the flora of your island.

  • Flimsy Ax: 40 hits
  • Stone Ax i The ax: 100 hits
  • Golden Ax: 200 hits

Slingshot

Slingshot is great in that there is no Flimsy version, plain Slingshot is the basic item. However, it also means that the base item breaks much faster than other tools, so don’t expect to shoot balloons at will. Also, if you accidentally fire a shot into the air and it hits nothing, it won’t count on your endurance.

  • Slingshot: 20 shots (also includes colorful slingshots and outdoor slingshots at Nook’s Cranny)
  • Golden slingshot: 60 shots

Watering Can

A watering can can be a little difficult to determine, as it seems to lose its durability without watering – but not as fast as watering flowers. However, it is worth noting that watering multiple flowers at the same time still counts as just one use, so positioning when gardening is crucial, especially with Golden Bay, which you can earn by earning 5 stars.

  • Flimsy Watering Can: Approximately 20 successful waters, only one flower watered directly in front of the player
  • Watering Can: Approximately 60 uses, watering a rectangle of flowers 3×2 in front of the player (also includes colorful, elephants and outdoor watering cans in Nook’s Cranny)
  • Golden Watering Can: Approximately 180 successful waters, watering a square of flowers 3×3 in front of the player

Jump pole and ladder

Both the pillar and the ladder have no alternative versions, but they also have infinite durability. You can also now build permanent ladders that will remain on the cliff but cannot be moved or picked up after installation.

How do I get the basic tools?

You will first get access to Flimsy Tools by completing Tom Nook’s “do it yourself workshop” (aka tutorial). You unlock this extremely early in the adventure – Nook will ask you to come to the tent to complete it the first full day on the island. When you talk to him and finish the tutorial, you will get recipes for Flimsy fishing rod, net and ax.

The recipe for a weak watering can was also donated by Tom Nook, but this time it comes after you show him at least four bugs or fish after completing a DIY workshop. The recipe for Flimsy Shovel will be a gift from the Blatters, who arrives on your island after Tom Nook shows 15 beetles or fish. The recipe for the vault stick also comes from the Blathers at the moment.

To make a stronger tool, you will need to purchase a “Everyday Tools AZ” recipe set from Nook Rate for 3000 Nook miles. The set includes a shovel, a fishing rod, a watering can, a stone ax and an ordinary ax.

The only tools left are the Slingshot, a recipe you can buy from Timmy at Nook’s Cranny for 300 bells, and the Ladder, given to you by Tom Nook after you’ve built and equipped your first three villagers ’homes.

Special tools with a unique design, such as Colorful or Outdoorsy, do nothing unique – they are for show only. You can buy them in an upgraded version of Nook’s Cranny, but there are currently no recipes for making them.

How do I get the Golden Tool?

To unlock these long lasting gold tools, you must first meet the prerequisite. Once you get them, make sure you have some gold coins with you so you can make them.

  • You get a gold fishing rod when you catch one of each fish in the Critterpedia.
  • A gold net is obtained when you catch one of each bug in Critterpedia.
  • You will receive a recipe for the Golden Ax by mail after you break other axes 100 times.
  • The gold slingshot will be attached to the gold balloon that appears after you pop 300 balloons.
  • Gulliver will send you a Golden Shovel after you help him 30 times.
  • Isabelle gives you a recipe for a Golden Watering Can when you get a 5-star rating for your island.

Is there a way to keep the tools from breaking down?

Unfortunately, there technically there is no way for tools not to break permanently, nor is there a way to “fix” tools that are close to breaking. This includes gold tools, which will also eventually become useless.

However, the new customization kits at New Horizons offer a great solution: by customizing the tool, its durability is immediately reset. Therefore, if you know that you have reached the final use of the fishing rod, but you have a set for adjustment, go to the table for making and you can restore the former shine to your rod.

However, this does not work with either Flimsy or Golden tools, as neither of them is customizable.

Tools for success

Now that you know when the tools will break down, you can have your backups ready so you will never run out of a reliable tool again. Granted, you may spend a few extra places on your inventory, but the stress of capturing it another fish before the loss of fishing ability is far away even worse, trust us.

In addition, you will be able to procure so many fish, beetles and materials that the feeling of success and the sounds of bells in your pocket will compensate for all the problems with stocks. Now go and explore with your tools!
