Apple has released macOS Monterey 12.2 for Mac users using the Monterey operating system. The update includes important security updates and is therefore recommended for installation by all Mac users.
In particular, macOS Monterey 12.2 fixes a security leak in Safari that has recently attracted attention, along with patching other security holes and perhaps other problems or bugs. No new features or changes are expected in 12.2, and support for universal control is not included in 12.2.
Mac users using macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina will find security updates available for their system software versions as well.
Separately, updates are available for iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 to address the same security issues on iPhone and iPad, and updates are available for watchOS 8.4, HomePod, and tvOS 15.3.
However, MacOS Monterey 12.1 does not include support for Universal Control, a feature that allows a single Mac keyboard and mouse to control multiple Macs or iPads. According to Apple, that long-awaited function has now been postponed until “spring 2022.”
How to download update for MacOS Monterey 12.2
Always back up your Mac using Time Machine before installing any system software updates.
- Go to the Apple menu, then select “System Preferences”
- Select the desired “Software Update” panel.
- Select “Update Now” when the macOS Monterey 12.2 update proves to be available
You may need to refresh the software update control panel by pressing Command + R before the macOS Monterey 12.2 update appears for some Mac users.
Although the update primarily contains a solution to the Safari leak security bug, the update for macOS 12.2 weighs about 2 GB.
Users who do not yet use macOS Monterey will instead find macOS Big Sur 11.6.3 available as a software update or Security Update 2022-001 for Catalina if they are still using macOS Catalina.
