An error in iOS 15 messages causes deleted photos to be deleted

A serious error in the Messages app on iOS 15 could cause some saved photos to be deleted, according to several complaints we’ve heard MacRumors Twitter readers and users.

If you save a photo from a Messages thread and then continue deleting that thread, the next time iCloud is backed up, the photo will disappear.

Although the image is saved in your personal iCloud photo library, it appears to still be associated with the Messages app in ‌iOS 15‌, and saving does not continue by deleting or backing up ‌iCloud‌.

To replicate this error, you must take the following steps:

  1. Save a photo from a conversation in Messaging to your camera.
  2. Make sure the photo is saved.
  3. Delete the conversation in the Messages from which the photo came. The photo will still be in your “iCloud photo library” at this time.
  4. Back up ‌iCloud‌ and the photo will disappear.

This is worrying because most users maintain the “iCloud” Backup feature enabled and this is something that happens automatically. If you are someone who regularly deletes a message, if you want to keep a photo, you will not be able to keep it with “iCloud” backup turned on. We tested this bug on an iPhone with iOS 15.1 beta 2 and deleted our photo after deleting the message threads and performing a “iCloud” backup, so the issue is not yet resolved in the current beta.

Until you fix this error, if you’ve downloaded photos from the Messages app, make sure you keep these messages and don’t delete them to prevent them from being automatically removed from your devices.

(Thanks, Chad!)
