Chatting with Alex could soon be even more natural as Amazon begins introducing a voice assistant talk mode. This feature, which the company had at its hardware event in the fall of 2020, allows a group of people to communicate back and forth with Alex without having to say the word to wake up multiple times.
Conversation Mode debuts on the third generation of the Echo Show 10, and Amazon will introduce it in the next few weeks. It’s an opt-in option, and you can turn it on by saying “Alexa, join this conversation.” Everyone in the room will be able to talk to the voice assistant, as long as they look at the screen and the smart screen camera can see them.
Saying “leave this conversation” or turning off the microphone or camera will end the conversation mode. Alexa will also turn it off if there is no interaction for a certain amount of time.
There are visual indicators that are displayed when the talk mode is active. You’ll see a blue border around the screen and a light blue bar at the bottom when Echo Show 10 sends your requests to the cloud. There are no videos or pictures, and you will be able to view and delete voice recordings via the Alexa app.
Amazon that AI in Conversation Mode uses visual and acoustic cues to determine when someone says something to Echo Show 10. Alexa then formulates a response based on the context. The company plans to improve the way it works over time and add features such as the ability to interrupt the list of options by saying something like “That!”
The feature is based on features added by Amazon to make Alexa sound more like a real person, including inhaling, changing the tone of voice, and emphasizing certain words. In talk mode, Alexa will pause when interrupted.
Google Assistant had a similar feature, Continued Conversation,. Apple allegedly worked on a way to allow people to talk to Siri.
