At the time of writing, the iPhone line for 2021, i.e. The 13 Series iPhone 13 has not been introduced, but there is so much to talk about the 2022 line. We’ll keep track of every leak, rumors and everything you need to know about the iPhone line next year until its launch, so be sure to bookmark this page.
What you need to know about the iPhone 2022 line
Apple is making big strides with its line of iPhone 2022s, as it will kill the smallest (Mini) size of iPhone, which they wore for up to two years with the iPhone 12 Mini (2020) and iPhone 13 Mini (2021).
What will the iPhones be called in 2022?
Apple used the addition of the letter “s” in the name when there were no major hardware or design changes, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6s. This is not the case with the 2022 lineup because this time we will experience a big change, which I will share below, so it is safe to use the iPhone 14 as the name for the 2022 lineup.
How many iPhone models will there be in 2022?
In 2020, the mini model did not do well in terms of sales, so it is said that Apple will discontinue the Mini version after the 13 Series. However, Apple will launch 4 variants of the 14 Series, and none of them will be a mini version, 4 variants will be next :
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Max
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
What sizes of iPhone 14 series will come?
According to Ross Young (Well-known screen analyst), Apple will change the screen size of the 2022 iPhone models compared to the 2020 and 2021 models. The iPhone 2022 series will be in the following sizes:
- 6.1 inches – iPhone 14
- 6.1 inches – iPhone 14 Pro
- 6.7 inches – iPhone 14 Max
- 6.7 inches – iPhone 14 Pro Max
Appearance, design and construction of the iPhone 14 series
As reported by FrontPageTech, the iPhone 14 series will look quite similar to the iPhone 12 series and the iPhone 13 series, but this time Apple will change fewer things. The iPhone 2022 series will have a thicker chassis compared to the 12 and 13 series, which will help Apple completely get rid of camera bumps by achieving a flat back panel, all camera lenses, LED flash, LiDAR and other camera sensors will be aligned with the rear window.
As for the sides, according to investor JP Morgan Chase, Apple will use Titanuim for the iPhone 14 series, which will give the side edges more scratch-resistant and stronger construction, plus more corrosion-resistant compared to steel. This does not mean that all models will be made of Titanium, there is a high probability that Titanium could be limited to Pro models only. Also, as FrontPageTech reports, Apple could change the shape of the volume buttons into a circle, as we saw in the iPhone 4, 5 and 5s era. The speaker openings will drop behind the elongated speaker grille.
A full-screen iPhone, no commas, no holes, and even the foldable iPhone Apple has been working on since early 2021 is not expected before 2023-24.
Will the iPhone 14 series have an Under Display Touch ID?
There are reports from Bloomberg, Apple has tried a way to include Under Display Touch ID for the iPhone, but that is not expected soon. It looks like Apple will only use Under Display FaceID for the iPhone 14 series, keeping the Touch ID below the screen for future iPhones.
IPhone 14 series battery upgrade
As the iPhone 14 series will have a thicker chassis, Apple will definitely use the extra space to fit in a larger battery, it is too early to comment on the exact capacity, but you can expect at least a 10% increase in the base model, ie iPhone 14 compared to iPhone 13. Everything will This will definitely add extra weight to newer models, so be prepared for that, start exercising.
IPhone 14 series without commas?
In March 2021, Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple would give up the famous comma introduced with the iPhone X, and would go to the screen introduced by Huawei with its Honor View 20. Don’t worry Apple’s FaceID technology hasn’t stayed yet, but this time all that technology will go under the screen. Giving a look similar to most Android phones.
If you like to see that little comma on your iPhone and don’t want it to look like an Android phone for some reason, there’s a possibility that lower models (other than Pro) will keep a smaller comma like the iPhone 13 series.
Will the iPhone 14 series have a C-type port or no ports at all?
As you can see at first glance shared by FrontPageTech, unfortunately, the lightning port will probably remain on the iPhone 14 series as well. But the renderings they shared were based on very early prototypes, and there is a lawsuit in the European Union that could force Apple to switch to port C at least for EU countries. So there’s little chance we could see a Type C port on the iPhone 14 series. An iPhone without a port cannot be seen in the near future because the air charging technology is still in its infancy.
Performance enhancements to the iPhone 14 series
Every year, newer phones become more powerful because the newer chip in them gets more efficient and raw power to perform any task. Apple uses its A-series chip for its iPhone, and for the iPhone 14 series Apple will use it calling it the A16 Bionic. It was expected to be based on the 3nm architecture produced by TSMC, but TSMC later confirmed that they expect production delays of 3-4 months, so it will be difficult for Apple to get them on time. So by now we could see that the A16 will be based on a 4nm process instead of 3nm.
Also, there were reports that we were able to see the steam chamber cooling system in the higher-end iPhone 14 series models. We will have more clarity in the coming months.
Series 14 camera enhancements
Apple will play big cards when it comes to cameras from the iPhone 14 series, Ming-Chi Kuo reported that there is little chance that Apple could use a periscope lens from the manufacturer Semco, which enables optical zoom up to 10X. But there’s still no solid evidence to support it, and if that happens, Apple will take its sweet time to perfect and present in its own way, so take it with a little salt.
If Apple plans to delay the periscope lens, then Kuo points out that we could see a 48-megapixel camera on the Pro models, along with 8K video. Another report also points out that Apple could use a lens with a 7P element for a telephoto camera.
When will the iPhone 14 series launch and how much will it cost?
Apple is expected to follow its routine schedule for the next iPhone models as well, so it should appear in September 2022, and delivery should begin in 3-4 weeks in September. For now, there is no price information for the iPhone 14 series, but prices are expected to rise with a significant margin compared to the iPhone 13 models, due to the lack of a global chip.
That’s all we know about the iPhone 14 series coming in 2022. I’ll continue to update this as soon as more information arrives, until the official launch. So be sure to bookmark this page if you haven’t already done so. Let us know which of these things you are most looking forward to.
