Adobe Project Shasta is a web-based audio editor powered by AI

Adobe is testing a new web-based tool that uses AI to simplify audio recording. The software is called, and could make recording and editing podcasts and other projects much easier and more accessible.

The project began at Adobe Labs as an experiment to find “new ways to help people edit audio on the web,” wrote Mark Webster, Adobe’s head of audio products, in a post on Product Hunt. “But then it became clear that the Pandemic made recording difficult, even for audio professionals. Our vision has become to empower everyone with the tools they need to create professional sound.”

The result is a browser-based tool – it requires Google Chrome – to create and edit audio in the visual interface without the need for professional equipment or other advanced tools.

Users record their sound in clips, and Shasta automatically transcribes the recordings. From there, editing is as simple as deleting text from a transcription. There are also filters based on artificial intelligence that can improve sound quality or automatically remove words like “mind”. Project Shasta also supports remote recording, so guest speakers can easily join the recording. The software will manage clip synchronization even if one person has a bad internet connection.

Although the most obvious case of using Shaste is recording podcasts, Webster notes that it could also be used for voice recordings, videos and other projects with an audio component.

For now, it is unclear what exactly Adobe planned for Project Shasta. Webster said the software is in the “early Alpha” phase and that the company is now sharing it to get feedback from testers, but did not reveal when it could be available more widely. Project Shasta is “free for now” for those seeking access through the Adobe website.
