The Spotify desktop app is great for music lovers. You can use it to listen to music, but also to control playback on other devices. However, one of the bad things about Spotify is that it starts automatically when you start your Windows computer. So even if you don’t want to use Spotify, it will start minimized in the background, so you’ll have to close it manually. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to disable Spotify for computers from starting automatically. Here are three quick ways to prevent Spotify from starting on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7.

Stop opening Spotify at startup in Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7
By default, Spotify for computers starts automatically when you start your computer. This ensures a flawless experience, but can slow down the startup process and even cause lag or stumble on cheaper machines.
So, if you don’t use Spotify every time you use your computer, you can prevent it from starting on its own in the ways listed below. The methods will work on Windows 11, Windows 10, as well as Windows 8 and 7 computers.
1. Turn off autorun in Spotify Desktop
The easiest way to prevent Spotify from starting automatically in Windows is to turn off automatic startup in Spotify settings, as shown below.
- Open the Spotify app for computers on a Windows computer.
- Click on the profile picture in the upper right corner – select Settings.
- Scroll down and click Show advanced settings.
- Here, look Window startup and behavior.
- Tap the drop-down menu next to “Open Spotify after logging in to your computer. ”
- Change from Minimized or Yes to No..
Furthermore, if you do not want Spotify to run in the background after you have closed it, disable the “Close button should minimize the Spotify window” switch.
2. Disable Spotify Startup in Windows Task Manager
The built-in task manager in Windows lets you control applications that are allowed to run at startup. You can use it to prevent Spotify from starting at startup, as follows:
- Press Win + X on the desktop and select Task Manager. You can also search and open it from the Start menu or press CTRL + Shift + Esc.
- When task management opens, head to Startup tab.
- Here, right click Spotify app. Select Disable.
- The status should change from Enabled to Disabled.
That’s it. The Spotify computer client will no longer open automatically when you start your computer.
3. Use Spotify Web Player
Another option is to use a Spotify web player that works more or less similar to a desktop application. If you don’t want Spotify to eat resources on your computer, sign in to open.spotify.com in your browser to enjoy music. If it suits you, remove the application.
Note that the web player offers a lower transfer rate compared to the desktop client. It gives 128kbps bitrate for free users, while premium accounts get 256kbps bitrate. On the other hand, the desktop application offers 160kbps for free accounts and 320kbps for premium users.
Also, the desktop client allows you to download Spotify music for listening offline, which is not possible with the web version.
